Meanings & Messages
This piece was part of a competition for the ACJ titled 'Meanings & Messages', it is based of one of the given themes, ‘Tributes and personal Narratives'. This also had a deeper theme of memories and attachments, memories and emotions are very powerful able to control our actions and desires. Throughout our lives we make memories and connections, objects and belongings become a way to transport us back to those precious times. These objects hold such value that even when they serve no purpose we still struggle to part with them. Most people hold onto and collect these trinkets and one in particular for myself is old keys. Keys for me symbolise security, a home, and the feeling of love and stability. Keeping old keys is a way to keep hold of the item that the key unlocks eg. a home or a car, and those items remind us of good times. A collection of keys can tell a story of your timeline showing where you've come from and where you're going.
This key necklace is inspired by the collection of keys passed down from my late mother, I find possessions are vessels for people's essences and memories, and holding onto such items is a way to connect to them. I wanted to create a piece which reminded me of her, I always remember her chaotic keychains, the sounds they made and the weight in my hands. There are five negative space keys one for each person left in my family, the negative space represents the loss we feel as individuals and as a family. I black smaller keys symbolise forgotten memories and emotions, which lay dormant waiting to rise to the surface. I want this piece to evoke memories in each
viewer, and to think about how the past tethers us to the world and the people around us. I chose black and white along with rust to convey how memories decay over time. I received an honorary mention for this piece.
