Future
I was tasked with a live brief to design and produce unique pieces for the Craft Festival themed ‘Future’, I crafted two stained-glass panels titled "Hope" and "Despair". These artworks, forming a cohesive set, demonstrate a fusion of decorative glass techniques that utilize light and color to depict contrasting views of the future.
Drawing on the interplay of light and color, I explore dual visions of the future: a dystopian and a utopian perspective. The "Despair" panel captures feelings of anxiety, bleakness, and chaos through dark colors and chaotic designs, using techniques like sandblasting and deep black enamel paint. This mirrors the difficulty of seeing a clear future in troubling times.
Conversely, the "Hope" panel represents clarity and optimism with its bright, clear glass and vivid colors of yellow, red, and blue, symbolizing a spectrum of emotions and promoting positivity. This piece invites viewers to reflect outwardly and embrace an optimistic view. Both panels incorporate mirrored glass and symmetrical designs inspired by Rorschach tests to encourage viewers to reflect on their perceptions and choices about the future. In an era where stained glass is a diminishing craft, especially underrepresented at craft festivals, these panels aim to revitalize and modernize the art. By introducing innovative techniques uncommon in traditional stained-glass work, I hope to breathe new life into this art form. My goal is to connect with the audience through a personal narrative embedded in these pieces, hoping to leave a lasting impression that rekindles interest in stained glass.
